Taking children cycling in summer: practical tips
We are in the middle of summer, and cycling brings so many benefits, in terms of health, fun, and on a practical level: it is easier and faster for short distances, it also brings some savings for our wallet, but above all for our nerves and time: no need to look for parking or get impatient in traffic, just go where your heart takes you in complete freedom!
This is a bit more complicated but not impossible for parents of small children, it still takes a lot of organisation to get their little ones around!
If you still have to choose the right bike, we suggest you follow this link to learn more about the various ways to take children on a bike.
While in this article you will find some useful advice on how best to organise yourself.
Every parent knows that when you're out and about with small children, you have to take the house with you and be sure that something will be missed.
Here are a few reminders, to be as prepared as possible for going out with the little one in general, and cycling in particular.
I have a small organiser bag in which I put the necessities that can't be missed when we are away from home, the list is yours:
2 nappies (and yes, I am wearing two, as experience teaches us that the freshly put on nappy is the best target for the most consistent nappy doings)!
thermos bottle with water (again, I use the thermos bottle, because in my opinion all bottles leave that plastic smell and taste that I don't like, in summer then the thermos bottle also keeps the temperature)
packet of moistened tissues
packet of dry tissues (with children there are never too many!)
sunscreen in summer is a must, and I always carry it with me
2 anti-mosquito wipes, my son is literally devoured without these.
a small packet of biscuits to stop sudden hunger
a change of clothes (why yes!)
a vial of Sirmione water, a quick way to clean the nose
a grapefruit seed gel, turned out to be excellent against jellyfish stings, I also use it against other stings, and I pray they don't happen.
a toy
some money,
This bag is always ready and always with us, the rest is variable, if we go to the beach we take the towel, if we go to the park we take the ball and so on.
If we do the route with sections without a cycle track, we wear a helmet for the little one.
The organiser-bag, I put it in my handbag or rucksack, and together with my bag and other items I place them in the glove compartment of our TAGA (you can find details of this fantastic bike-stroller here), under the seat, but it can also be put in the rucksack to carry on my back. I also find the shoulder strap that I place on the handlebars of the TAGA convenient; it allows me to have most of what I need right at my fingertips.
If we go out before 6 p.m., I put protective cream on the baby's legs and on me, the TAGA has the sun cover that coats him all over, leaving only the legs from the knees down uncovered.
Always with me the rain cover for TAGA, it doesn't take up space and has already proved quite useful during a storm that came out of nowhere.
I usually also bring some seasonal fruit snacks, a knife, a plastic plate, until recently I even brought the small grater, but now the little one shreds everything with his little teeth.
Happy cycling to all! If you have the TAGA, it's pure fun!
