BICYCLE SAFETY with Children: Carry 1 to 4 Children Safely
With this article we open our Campaign of awareness on the Security by bicycle.
The Highway Code, and this is a fairly well-known fact, states that in an approved bicycle seat you can carry a child, up to 15 kg in front e up to 25 kg behind.
But about the transport of TWO children in a classic bicycle, regulated by the same traffic code (Art. 182), is not allowed and that's where the kettle falls!
Now we drop it like a pear, but even the most agile balancers put their children at great risk. Not least because, no matter how agile they may be, if something were to happen due to the fault of others, they risk being in the wrong for not respecting the traffic rules.
A “let's hope it doesn't” of course is meagre consolation.
I always get a shock when I see parents balancing two children on a bicycle, on the road, and, as if that were not enough, punctually without helmet!
Yesterday, I even saw a mother carrying two children without helmets on the road and talking on her mobile phone.
NOOO!!!
How can we therefore transporting children by bicycle without compromising security?
First of all putting on their helmets (they also exist for children!) Although it is not made compulsory by our highway code, it can reduce the risks of 85% (according to the study published in the New England Journal Of Medicine).
I'll tell you more, even though it's very unusual, I'm getting used to wearing a helmet for my son as well.
Putting up lights and spotlights, which, on the other hand, are obligatory under the Highway Code and serve to give you good visibility on the road. The Highway Code obliges their use starting half an hour before sunset and up to half an hour after sunrise.
And yes, that's right! You can only transport a child! for bikes from 12 months up to 8 years of age in the type-approved seat (EN 14344) with footrest, backrest and an attachment and safety system in accordance with standards for a maximum weight of 15 kg and height of 1 metre for the front seat; the child must not hinder nor good visibility nor the freedom of movement nor the balancing capacity (the latter being very subjective. Personally, having spent my life on a bicycle, I don't feel like taking responsibility for transporting a child on a two-wheeler, especially after so many accidents I have seen).
And for a maximum of 25 kg permitted (here, however, pay close attention because I do not know of any brand of rear seats with a maximum weight exceeding di 22 kg!) always if they do not impair driving ability.
Why the small child carried in front, while reaching 15 kg behind lies in the fact that the position in front of the parent is safer and also offers visual control (which is not the case at the back). However, at 15 kg, it becomes an obstacle to safe riding on a two-wheeled bicycle, so the child is moved to the rear.
WHAT IF WE NEED TO TRANSPORT 2 OR MORE CHILDREN BY BIKE?!
This is only possible thanks to the cargo bike, recently also said Family Bike, are bicycles built specifically for transport, I would like to say children, but the reality is that only one bicycle is specially designed to transport children and is the TAGA. While the others were decently adapted from transporting goods, to transporting children.
However, this does not change at the level of the road code, which, in this case allows you to transport even up to four children.
These special bicycles can be either two- or three-wheel and in any case they offer greater safety on the bike for children, especially if it is more than one.
The three-wheel bicycle offers a greater stability, This is discussed in another article in our Cycling Safety Campaign.
So, I recommend the helmets, possibly to you as well, light and reflector kit e never more than one child on a classic two-wheeler, while for two children and more use only one Family Bike, better still the TAGA!
We look forward to seeing you next Friday, while throughout this week we put in discount of 20% helmets, lights and TAGAs configured for transporting two and more children.
