But what is it?!

The literal and also correct translation would be the cargo bicycle, a bicycle created and capable of carrying a lot of cargo, unlike a normal bicycle. Perfect for grocery shopping, carrying the necessities for a picnic, or making a small move. 😉 In addition to goods, such bikes are also capable of carrying people. When we were at Eurobike 2018 they even gave us a lift!

In recent years, cargo bikes have been widely used to transport children. In fact, it is much more fun, practical, economical and educational to carry them in a cargo bike than in a car!

And cargo bikes also exist in all kinds! I give you a brief guide to existing cargo bikes.

THREE-WHEEL CARGO BIKES

Cargo bike with one front wheel and two rear wheels, just like the tricycle from when we were kids. It is the least popular type of cargo bike, yet quite popular with older people. The main advantage is the price, it costs less than all other cargo bikes. Also because it is more of a real cargo bike than a real adult tricycle. Disadvantages are several. Apart from the truly hideous appearance, it is not so safe when cornering. It's also dangerous in tight areas, because you pass in front of it, but you can never be sure that you pass with the rear. Also everything you put in the back is not safe at all. In fact at Eurobike 2018 we didn't see a single one! Also, I've never seen children being carried except for the very dangerous DIY solutions.

Cargobike with two wheels at the front and one at the back. This is also a tricycle, but with this little modification it really changes everything! First of all, it's really cool! The market is full of beautiful three-wheeled cargo bikes made this way. Also, this is the type of bike that can carry the most cargo. Another important aspect is that you see what's in front of you, that's important with cargo, but it's even more important with children. Safe! Yes, the three-wheel bicycle, especially when two wheels are in front, is more stable and can stand on its own. An even more important feature when you have to transport children. Especially if it doesn't have a tilt steering, with which, in addition to the need to practise a bit, you still have to think about balance even when you have mastered it. But not with TAGA! However, this type of cargo car, with one wheel at the front and two at the back, is undoubtedly the safest and most popular. The electric version is recommended for easier driving. The only exception is the TAGA BIKE, especially the buggy model, which is extremely light and rides perfectly even without the motor.

TWO-WHEELED CARGO BIKES

In general, these bikes are less stable as any two-wheelers, but being cargo bikes requires a bit more skill, especially for starting and manoeuvring, slowing down, etc.

Le Cargo bike Long Tail. In my opinion it is the best type of bike in the two-wheel category. It looks great and rides almost like a normal bike. Available both with and without a motor. In the electric version you can almost not notice the difference to your normal bike. The advantages, apart from that, are also its excellent handling in traffic and convenience for getting around in the old, narrow, cobblestone streets. Very popular with dads. The disadvantages are that the load is at the back, especially if it is children, instability compared to the three-wheeled category, and relatively little load in terms of volume, not weight, that it can carry.

Two-wheeled Cargobikes with the load in front. These are also quite common, along with the three-wheeled category, which again proves that front loading is a better solution. The load carrier is located between the front wheel and the handlebar. It can only be made of a frame capable of holding a load or even a box. Advantages, the load capacity is almost the same as in the case of the three-wheeled bikes with the caisson in front, the cost can be lower than with the other solutions, except the first one, which is the cheapest. By the way, with the TAGA the difference is almost non-existent. Disadvantages, driving is much more complicated and it is not easy to keep your balance. It is long and very cumbersome.

Conclusions. Personally, and based on various experiences, I believe that three-wheel cargo bikes with two front wheels are the best. The most universal and practical bicycle is undoubtedly the TAGA BIKE, especially the Family model. Much loved by mums, but also very popular with dads. In some situations, for example if one lives in the city centre with very narrow streets, often riding in traffic and it is mainly or only dad who rides, Long Tail bikes are not bad at all. But if both are driving and you are looking for the most practicality and universal use, then the choice is only TAGA BIKE!
